Join members of Belfast Philharmonic Choir, director James Grossmith, and accompanist Gail Evans, to learn Elgar’s dramatic cantata, The Black Knight.
For James Grossmith’s first Come and Sing as Chorus Director of the Belfast Philharmonic Society, he has chosen Elgar’s choral ballad The Black Knight which tells a dark medieval romantic tale. The Black Knight set Longfellow’s translation of Uhland’s Der schwarze Ritter, a poem which begins when a mysterious stranger enters a jousting competition and challenges the king’s son. As events unfold, the story turns darker, the choir voicing all the roles in this vivid narrative as it spins towards its conclusion.
The day is open to singers of all ages and experience levels who would like to learn this theatrical piece of musical storytelling in English, led by the Philharmonic’s professional Director and Accompanist, and supported by members of the chorus. In the friendly environment of the Phil’s own rehearsal hall in St Bride’s you will be led through the cantata and given performance tips; get a chance to meet keen singers from all over Northern Ireland; and finally sing the piece all together for an audience of friends and family at the end of the day.
As we approach the end of the 22/23 season the Society are excited to have another opportunity to bring singers together for a Come and Sing – make sure to book your tickets as soon as possible!
Rehearsal: 10:30am – 3:30pm (lunch break 1:00pm-2:00pm)
Performance: 4:00pm – 5:00pm (performance tickets must be booked separately)
Places are open to singers of all levels – please book early to guarantee your ticket!
Please indicate during booking which voice part you sing, as well as whether you are bringing your own score.
There is no dress code for the day, but please wear something warm and comfortable.
