19th April 2019, Ulster Hall, Belfast

Inspirational rendering of Mozart opus

“Good Friday was an appropriate day for the Ulster Orchestra and Belfast Philharmonic Choir's joint performance of the Mozart Requiem to a rapt audience in the Ulster Hall.

"Mozart's Requiem, and how it was composed, is one of the great stories of classical music.

This superb work was inspiringly performed under the baton of Rafael Payare, four excellent soloists and the Belfast Phil.

"Prior to the interval there was a rare performance of Brahms' Schicksalslied.

"The audience was not sure what to expect, including chorus master Stephen Doughty, who said so in his pre-concert talk with the orchestra's MD Richard Wigley.

"But the choir and orchestra were more than equal to the demands of this complex and beautiful music."

Alf McCreary
