5th May 2018, Ulster Hall, Belfast
As a composer I can say that the combination of elation and honour that comes with attending a performance of your music never gets old. So many people have devoted so many hours, so much skill and creative energy just to turn your conception into a living, breathing piece of music!
Last night was WONDERFUL! Stephen Doughty directed the Belfast Philharmonic Society Choir and Children’s Choir and Ulster Orchestra in an absolutely riveting ‘Earthsong’, to close a challenging and very satisfying programme in Ulster Hall.
My heart is so full of gratitude, not only to Stephen for rediscovering ‘Earthsong’ and to the choir for hosting me in Belfast, but to everyone who has supported me at every step of my career, including Andrew Carter, whose lovely ‘Benedicite’ preceded ‘Earthsong’ on the programme. It was he who in Auckland, so many years ago, programmed little ‘Minoi, Minoi’ and ‘Pusi Nofo’, my first choral pieces ever to receive a public performance.
